While summer is often a slower time for students and teachers, farm life and activities continue in full swing at Canterbury Creek Farm Preschool. As the children dive into fun and enriching summer camps, our team is hard at work ensuring that the farm remains in excellent condition and ready for the upcoming seasons.

Summer Camps: A Season of Fun and Learning

We have had a busy summer of camps, offering children a unique blend of adventure and education. From pony rides and feeding animals to creative arts and nature hikes, our campers experience the joys of farm life firsthand. The summer months are a perfect time for kids to explore, make new friends, and gain confidence in a supportive environment. We are currently offering Kindergarten Prep camp, so students who will be going into Kindergarten in the fall. This camp is 7 hours long, 5 days a week and the students are gradually exposed to some of the elements they will soon experience. It has been a great success so far, and we are looking forward to continue to offer this in the future!

Essential Farm Maintenance

While the campers are busy having fun, summer is also the ideal time for necessary repairs and maintenance around the farm. Here’s a look at some of the key tasks we focus on:

1. Fencing Repairs

With so much activity, it’s crucial to keep our fencing in top condition. We regularly inspect and repair fences to ensure they are secure and safe for our animals.

2. Playground and Equipment Maintenance

Our playgrounds and building equipment undergo thorough maintenance to ensure they are safe and enjoyable for our students. Regular checks and repairs keep everything in excellent working order.

3. Preparing for Winter

Summer is not only about preparing for the current season but also for the colder months ahead. One of our major tasks is stocking up on hay for our animals.

Hay Harvesting: Preparing for Winter

This summer, we’ve been busy securing a substantial supply of hay to keep our animals well-fed and comfortable during the winter months. Here’s a glimpse into the process:

  • Acquiring Hay: We recently obtained a large quantity of round bales from a neighboring farm. These bales are essential for providing food when grass is not available.
  • Transporting the Hay: Using our large trailer, we transport the round bales back to Canterbury Creek. The neighboring farm’s tractor, equipped with a bale spear, loads the bales onto our trailer with ease.
  • Storing the Hay: Once at the farm, we store the hay in our barns, ensuring it’s kept dry and ready for use throughout the winter.

Hay is a vital part of our animals’ winter diet. It helps them stay warm and healthy during the colder months when fresh pasture is scarce.

A Balancing Act

Balancing summer camp activities with farm maintenance is no small feat, but it’s a rewarding one. Our dedicated team works hard to ensure that both our campers and animals benefit from our efforts. From enjoying the thrill of summer camps to preparing for winter’s challenges, Canterbury Creek Farm Preschool remains a vibrant and nurturing environment for everyone involved. We look forward to welcoming our preschool students in the fall!
